Deep Time: Christopher Dewdney’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth

Deep Time: Christopher Dewdney’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth

DEEP TIME is a portrait of an artist pushing the outer limits of his imagination. At a time when humanity is destroying its habitat on an unprecedented scale, award-winning poet and essayist Christopher Dewdney embarks on a voyage through Deep Time that puts humanity’s brief existence on this planet into staggering perspective. Ranging far beyond the perimeters of our species—from fossilized imprints of Earth’s earliest life forms to visions of a transhuman future—we follow Dewdney on the ultimate field trip to four corners of the Earth, each representing one of the classical elements of nature: Earth, Water, Air and Fire. His odyssey takes him from coral reefs to a live volcano, from a dinosaur dig in the Montana Badlands to a space telescope in the Andean desert. And ultimately to the indigenous roots and oceanic pre-history of his Ontario home.

Charles Addams Drawn and Quartered

That magic moment just before dropping the boiling oil on the Christmas carollers; that rich, rare occasion when, by the dark of night, the pumpkin in the patch carves itself into a jack-o-lantern; that mystical way in which the skier defies reason (and physics) by rounding both sides of the tree – this is what goes on in the universe that is Charles Addams’ mind. Charles Addams: Drawn and Quartered delves into the life and art of the famed, internationally renowned New Yorker magazine cartoonist who first offered scenes of unsettlingly macabre humor to a conservative mid-20th century America and then went on to create one of the most enduring television/movie/theatrical franchises in modern memory – The Addams Family – all of which was the direct result of Addams’ unique way of seeing the sinister within the ordinary.
